Spotlight on Initiatives: Minerva LAW Network

The Minerva LAW (Legal and Academic Women’s) Network, one of the first established Max Planck Law Initiatives, is dedicated to supporting women legal researchers in overcoming the significant systemic disadvantages they encounter in their careers. Although the professions around law and legal reserach form a natural focus, the Initiative recognizes that there are many alternative career pathways, such as non-governmental organizations, journalism, and international civil service. In the organizer’s own words, ‘We aim to equip women researchers with the tools and networks they need to succeed across various fields’.

Since its establishment, the Minerva LAW Network has enjoyed much success. They have hosted many events that have attracted participants from across Max Planck Law and beyond. Training sessions led by successful prominent women have been particularly well-received, offering invaluable insights into career progression. The organizers note that many participants leave these events feeling more strategically informed and professionally empowered. This is especially because many of the events provide a relaxed space in which women can freely share their ideas and experiences, for example, the difficulties in starting a career with a family, how intersectionality plays a role, how sexism undermines their efforts, etc.

Some of the Minerva LAW Network organizers have also published a chapter in an edited collection. The chapter is titled ‘Career Building for Women Postgraduate and Early Career Researchers in Law Schools in Germany‘, and addresses the challenges faced by women in German legal academia. Unlike the UK, Germany’s academic system allows only six years between completing a PhD and obtaining a professorship, leading to a disproportionate number of women leaving academia. The chapter highlights the Network’s role in supporting these women through mentorship and career-building resources, aiming to enhance their employability and long-term career prospects.

Looking ahead, the Minerva LAW Network plans to expand its reach by hosting more events with high-profile speakers, increasing training sessions, and potentially creating a focused discussion group on gender and law. They are always looking for more people to join their events and get involved, particularly as organizers, and warmly encourage you to reach out.
