Jürgen Basedow, former director at the MPI for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on 6 April 2023. Basedow (1945–2017) was a leading scholar, an inspiring mentor, a member of important advisory bodies, and a former chair of the Human Sciences Section in the Max Planck Society. He was involved in the early preparations for setting up Max Planck Law.
