Our research partnership with the European University Institute in Florence is a great opportunity for Max Planck Law researchers to broaden their horizons and advance their research in a highly respected department well known for its international and interdisciplinary outlook. The exchange takes place every academic year.

A maximum of two PhD students or postdocs from the participating Institutes of Max Planck Law will be in residence in Florence. In return, two EUI researchers will be hosted by one of the Institutes in the Max Planck Law network.

Max Planck Law visitors to the EUI will be integrated into the life of the department and have access to the library, events, and online resources.

The Max Planck Law-EUI Exchange takes places every year. Applications are invited via our newsletter and social media channels, usually in January.

Max Planck Law exchange programmes provide a unique opportunity for Max Planck Law researchers to expand their horizons and pursue their research at institutions which are amongst the most respected for the study of law. We are pleased to announce that in addition to our existing exchanges with the University of Cambridge, the University of Melbourne, and The National University of Singapore, Max Planck Law researchers can now also apply for a visit to the European University Institute in Florence.

The new exchange takes place every academic year. A maximum of two PhD students or postdocs from the participating Institutes of Max Planck Law will be in residence in Florence for two to four months, and in return, up to two researchers from the EUI will be hosted by the Institutes in the Max Planck Law network.

Max Planck Law is now inviting applications to visit the European University Institute in Florence in the next academic year (2024–25). In addition, we are re-inviting applications to visit Singapore in the Autumn (August to November 2024) or Spring (January to April 2025) terms.

Your travel expenses and reasonable accommodation costs will be covered.

All researchers who will be employed at one of the nine Institutes in the Max Planck Law network at the time of their proposed visit are eligible to apply.

To apply, please send the following documents to petersson@law.mpg.de by Tuesday 30 April 2024:

  • a CV
  • a letter of motivation demonstrating the rigour, significance, and originality of the applicant’s research project and providing a rationale for pursuing the project at the host university
  • a statement from your Director authorizing your participation in the Exchange should your application be successful (a formal reference / letter of support is not required)

Please note that personal information transmitted as part of the application will be disclosed to the host institution for purposes related to the exchange programme.

If you have any questions, please contact the research coordinator, Dr Niels P Petersson, at petersson@law.mpg.de.
