This workshop provides a forum for the detailed scientific analysis of recent developments in global, regional, and comparative health law, spanning multiple national jurisdictions. It considers the application and interpretation of health law in light of the perpetual, rapid advancements in the fields of medicine, public health, and the life sciences. Furthermore, it responds to the pressing need to evaluate whether these legal frameworks—both old and new—adapt to these evolving developments. While the protection and promotion of human health offers an overarching normative framework, substantial divergences remain in the balancing of this goal with other societal interests and in the methods and mechanisms that are employed in its realization.
In this context, the upcoming workshop offers a unique platform for generating fresh, innovative insights by bringing together leading international experts in global, European, and comparative health law. Both senior and junior scholars from diverse regions will present and discuss their research on the workshop’s core themes, receiving valuable feedback on the publications that may result from the event.
The workshop has two primary scholarly objectives:
1. From a broad perspective, the workshop seeks to bring together perspectives from international, EU, and comparative health law to explore how emerging legal developments intersect with medical innovations within existing regulatory frameworks. Participants will have the opportunity to identify common insights and learn from the diversity of international approaches.
2. The workshop will also create space for in-depth debates on specific health law topics that require detailed examination. Each participant will present original research, showcasing their expertise while engaging with feedback from peers working on related issues.
The workshop will be followed by a public panel discussion, where two experts from the German government and academia will be joined by two international scholars. The goal is to exchange views with a live audience on the most pressing issues of global health law and governance, in light of the major political shifts that are taking place around the world.
These events will be held at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Berlin, 2–3 December 2024.
Registration for the workshop and the public panel discussion is available separately. Please use the form below to register for either one or both events.
