We celebrate the outstanding work that the researchers across the Max Planck Law network have produced over the past year. We are especially proud of the numerous awards they have won.
These include the Otto Hahn Medal, awarded by the Max Planck Society. Last year it was won by Daniel Burke , Ana Harvey and Alexander Rucketschler . This year the medal was awarded to Daria Kim , Ben Köhler and Raquel Razente Sirotti .
Both Daria Kim and Ben Köhler will continue furthering their research in the Max Planck Law network. Daria Kim says: ‘I have just started a post-doc position at the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition, where I research topics at the intersection of law and innovation, such as regulation of biomedical research, artificial intelligence and a data economy’. Raquel Razente Sirotti explains that what motivates her research is ‘proposing a new way of interpreting the relationship between criminal law and politics that takes into account historical developments and nuances. I want to show that ordinary criminal law and its due process was (and is) deeply functional to the repression of political conflicts in a broad variety of ways’. (Outstanding! [2022] 34)
Researchers across the network have won numerous other awards, too. These include:
- Hanjo Hamann was awarded the German Research Foundation’s (DFG) Early-Career Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize (2022), the first German lawyer to receive this honour in over twenty years;
- Caroline Heber was awarded both the Kardinal Innitzer Prize (2021) and the Albert Hensel Prize (2021) for her postdoctoral thesis ‘Enhanced Cooperation and European Taxation’;
- Luke Dimitrios Spieker received the Wilhelm Bender Prize (2022) for his doctoral thesis ‘EU Values before the Court. Foundations, Potential and Risks of an Article 2 TEU-based Jurisprudence’;
- Isabel Thielman has been awarded the €1.5 million ERC Starting Grant by the European Research Council (ERC) for her project ‘KNOW-THYSELF – Increasing Self-Knowledge to Promote Moral Behaviour’;
- Simone Schneider has also been awarded the €1.5 million ERC Starting Grant by the European Research Council (ERC) for her research project ‘The (Mis)Perception of Economic Inequality’;
- Mateusz Grochowski was a finalist for the Polityka Academic Prize, Poland’s most prestigious academic award;
- Yoan Hermstrüwer as awarded the University of Jena’s PhD Prize (2021) for his thesis ‘Engineering Games in the Public Interest—Essays in Experimental Law and Market Design’;
- Ana Carolina Carlos de Oliviera, formerly , was awarded the Luis María Cabello de los Cobos Award of the Aula Universidad Autónoma de Madrid for her scientific work ‘Architecture against money laundering of Spain’, published in 2020;
- Biset Sena Güneş was awarded the Juratisbona Prize for her doctoral thesis on international succession law by the Alumni Association of the Law Faculty at the University of Regensburg;
- William Frankenhuis received the Early Career Award for Distinguished Scientific Contribution from the Human Behaviour and Evolution Society (2021);
- Janne Mende received the Franz-Xaver-Kaufmann-Preis;
- Dominik Jordi Ornig was awarded the Pierre Werner Scholarship for his doctoral research entitled ‘Financial Digitalization and International Investment Disputes’.
Our Directors have been awarded with the following honours this year:
Professor Marietta Auer (Director) has been awarded the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize of the German Research Council (DFG) ‘for her outstanding work in the areas of legal theory and legal history, with which she has contributed to the development of a comprehensive legal-philosophical understanding of private law in relation to public law’. She was also elected Vice President of the German Research Council (DFG).
Professor Armin von Bogdandy (Director) received honorary doctorates by the University of Bucharest (2022) and the Universidad San Pablo de Tucumán (2022).
Professor Hélène Ruiz Fabri (Director) was elected Associate Member of the ‘Institut de Droit International’ (2021).
Professor Holger Fleischer (Director) received an honorary doctorate from Radboud University (2021).
Professor Anne Peters (Director) was elected Associate Member of the ‘Institut de Droit International’ (2021).
Following his election to the British Academy in July 2021, Stefan Vogenauer (Director) has now been formally admitted to the British Academy.
