Theory, Methods and Identity of European Legal Scholarship: Confronting Carl Schmitt

The course will study Carl Schmitt’s book “The Plight of European Jurisprudence” and will look through it at the current situation of legal scholarship in Europe.

The course will discuss the very function of legal scholarship, its methods, what European legal scholarship might or should mean. Also issues of German legal hegemony will be discussed, the deep objective of that book. Not least, the course will introduce the work of Carl Schmitt, one of the most compromised German legal scholars, but also one of the greatest legal minds of his century.
