Citizenship and Human Rights

Teaching Session

Director
Professor Dr Ayelet Shachar, MPI for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity

The Ethics, Law and Politics Department at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity will host a Max Planck Law teaching session in the form of a workshop on the topic of ‘Citizenship and Human Rights’ on 4–5 March 2021. The workshop aims to investigate the relationship between citizenship and human rights and the increasing regulation of citizenship in international human rights law. In different panels, questions will be addressed such as the right to nationality and access to citizenship, statelessness, the linkage between citizenship and political rights, as well as questions relating to citizenship and diversity.

The three thematic panels will focus on a specific issue (right to nationality and access to citizenship, citizenship and political rights, and citizenship and diversity) and offer participants the possibility to discuss current questions and approaches with experts in the field. A keynote by Prof. Kelly Staples and an Author Meets Critics panel with Dr. Luicy Pedroza will shed light on particular questions providing participants with additional perspectives on citizenship and statelessness, as well as immigrant status and electoral participation.

The workshop is open to interested doctoral and postdoctoral research fellows of the Max Planck Law Network working on questions relating to citizenship, human rights, political rights and diversity or related topics. Selected participants will have the opportunity to present their own work, depending on scheduling considerations.

The number of participants is limited to 15 persons. Participants are expected to attend both days of the workshop. Eligible participants will be selected on the basis of their research profile and motivation statement.

The workshop takes place at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity in Göttingen (MPI-MMG). Accommodation will be provided by the MPI-MMG for participants accepted for the workshop. We encourage sustainable travel arrangements, which should be arranged via the workshop participants’ home institutions.

Applications shall open in due course.
