How Humans Interact with Machines? An Overview of Experimental Evidence

The presentation will provide an overview of empirical research on automation and AI. Drawing on interdisciplinary evidence from economics, management, psychology, and related fields, it will synthesize what we know about human–AI interaction and discuss more recent influential studies on the effects of AI on workplaces and labour markets. The talk will highlight emerging patterns in the evidence, and key open questions for future research.

Dr Marina Chugunova is a Senior Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition in Munich. Her research examines how individuals and organizations interact with emerging technologies—particularly artificial intelligence—and how these interactions shape behaviour, decision-making, and outcomes in the workplace. She uses a range of empirical methods, combining laboratory, online, and field experiments with survey and observational data.
