Approaches to Legal Research 2025

All researchers, in particular new PhD students, are cordially invited to join us at the second Approaches to Legal Research event at Harnack-Haus in Berlin, 27–28 May 2025. Approaches to Legal Research aims to provide you with an awareness of a range of basic methods and perspectives that you may find useful in your current work and/or in your future academic research.

You will have the opportunity to learn about and engage with the following topics:

  • The Merits and Limits of Interdisciplinary Legal Research
  • Law and Economics
  • Law and Anthropology
  • Socio-Legal Studies
  • Legal History
  • Comparative Law
  • Critical Perspectives

Presenters include Dr Alexandra Mercescu (University of Timisoara | Co-author of Rethinking Comparative Law), Dr Maximilian Lukas Schmitt (MPI-Freiburg), Dr Farrah Raza & Dr Luisa Piart (MPI-Halle), Dr Christian Boulanger (MPI-Frankfurt), Dr Julie Rocheton (MPI-Frankfurt), and Dr Simon Gansinger (MPI-Freiburg).

The teaching sessions will be pitched at a level appropriate to new researchers. They will aim to strike a balance between instructional presentations and discussions, informed by the research experience of both presenters and participants. Alongside broadening your horizons as a researcher, you will be able to connect with peers from other Institutes in the Max Planck Law network and learn about their work.

Participants’ travel and accommodation will be reimbursed from the Max Planck Law budget.
